New Mexico Government

New Mexico’s governmental structure is established by the state Constitution and consists of an executive branch, a bicameral legislature, and a judiciary. The executive branch is composed of the Governor and other statewide elected officials including the Lieutenant Governor (elected on the same ticket as the Governor), Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer, and Commissioner of Public Lands. The governor appoints a cabinet that leads agencies statutorily designated under her/his jurisdiction. The New Mexico Legislature consists of the House of Representatives and Senate. The judiciary is composed of the New Mexico Supreme Court and lower courts. Local governing bodies throughout the state consist of counties, municipalities and special districts.
